New blog post: eclecticpassions.net/blog/mark

Reviewed my new planner of choice for 2025 - the MARK's EDiT weekly notes layout from Japan. I've used Hobonichi, Nolty, Midori and the like; and I have a good feeling for Marks esp how it passed my fountain pen test. ;)

What's your planner setup? I still enjoy paper planners / diaries a lot despite having most of my things digitized. Analogue for the win!

A transparent plastic folder partially reveals a white card print. The card reads "Edit New Life" and lists topics such as choosing tools and exploring spaces. The background is a speckled gray surface.

“The pen is mightier than the keyboard”.

“In three studies, we found that students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand. We show that whereas taking more notes can be beneficial, laptop note takers’ tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim rather than processing information and reframing it in their own words is detrimental to learning.”

A digital vs. analog reflection in The Erasable Podcast #217 erasable.us/episode/217

Guest Roland Allen discusses his history of the notebook. He mentions the difference between having pages physically accessible vs. text being in digital spaces that feel more distant.

Personally, I like the search available in digital spaces, but I also sympathize with the immediate presence of physical notebooks.

Perhaps that affinity for presence explains why I leave so many tabs open in my browser.

Notebooks have been used for self care, recipes, and so much more. The uses are almost as varied as the physical, and now even digital, forms of the books themselves. The book will give you insight into the importance of notebooks throughout history. It was one of the most enjoyable non-fiction books I have read this year.

A book I read.

I love notebooks. I have a collection of them. So I was really intrigued by the The Notebook: A history of thinking on paper by Ronald Allen. It covers the emergence of notebooks in Provence and Florence with double entry bookkeeping around 1299, uses in the home as Ricordi or Zibaldoni, common-place notebooks recording quotes, travel logs, naturalist notebooks, diaries and journals.
