---I love that on #Mastodon I can so quickly and easily MUTE someone, without them even knowing they are muted. I like to see people's art on here, but maybe there's an artist who posts several times a day trying to sell stuff on their shop... it becomes annoying so I just mute them. That way I keep seeing other people's art posts but not theirs.
---I love that I can easily create FILTERS so I will never have to scroll past or see posts of subjects i have no interest in seeing every day: Wordle solutions or daily tarot readings or blow-by-blow Lego builds or BTS updates (sorry! lol) And yes that means YOU can filter out posts about politics and politicians if you like.
---I loved when I discovered the magic of FOLLOWING HASHTAGS in order to connect with people with similar interests. Sure, using hashtags in your post will get it seen by others who FOLLOW that hashtag, but if YOU follow your favorite subject hashtags in your settings, you'll start seeing tons of people who like the very same things as you! Then you can choose which of those people to follow, and you'll always see their posts in your timeline from then on- Yay, lots of new friends to talk with and share with! Following a hashtag in your settings is far more powerful than simply using a hashtag in your posts, I have found. Look up online how to follow a hashtag on Mastodon.

Mastodon has such easy and powerful ways to tailor what you see, to exactly the way YOU like!

#NewToMastodon

Might be an unpopular view but I think #mastodon needs an algorithm, or at least a mechanism to control what stuff I'm fed. I wonder if there's a way to use AI to help with this, or that using a seldhammer to crack a nut?

“Why do we need #Pixelfed when #Mastodon already hosts images?”

Something to learn about the Fediverse is that it’s not about “need” it’s about desire. No one needs to make anything but if devs desire to make it, then it will be made—simple as that.

Mastodon may have some elements of image-sharing but that’s a secondary feature. Even then, its image-sharing abilities are limits and will always be subservient to being a Twitter-like microblog.

Pixelfed’s primary purpose is image-sharing, and text is secondary. In fact, you can’t just share text in Pixelfed—text-only posts are filtered out.

Many people also prefer the UI/UX of Pixelfed over Mastodon, and their preference is simply their preference. They won’t use Mastodon just because Mastodon can share images.

Nevertheless, Mastodon is made better when it can communicate with different ActivityPub-enabled platforms.

Mastodon NZKo Simon C. Hulse toku ingoa (@SimonCHulse@mastodon.nz)@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org can someone explain to me why we need a separate image sharing site when mastodon already has this feature? I am confused, as I always have been about why insta needed to exist in the first place.

For anyone asking about why I use the Fediverse over Bluesky.

I use the Fediverse because of a few reasons;

1. The people and software are more customizable and can be self hosted.

2. Bluesky was originally the idea of making Twitter more decentralized but turned into it's own project after lots of money from big tech (and is still getting lots of money put into it)

3. AT Protocol vs ActivityPub Protocol. Personally I don't really care either way but when ActivityPub is built as a standard by the same organization for HTML & CSS then yeah ActivityPub it is.

4. The usernames, The usernames on Bluesky is cool till you think oh, I have a few people that I want using the same Instance / domain making you have to make new subdomains for the usernames, Just go with the email like layout Fedi software has, it's simple and it just like email.

5. Instances, The fediverse allows anyone to set up there own server with whatever Fediverse software and still connect with others. Bluesky is one software and most people are on one instance making it another centralized platform that just wants to look decentralized.

6. Ownership of followers, due to point number 5 if you get banned or want to move away from Bluesky you can't. With the Fediverse you own your following allowing you to move your followers to your own instance or just another one if you wanted a change.

Even with all of this I still cross-post my posts via
@bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy as it gives me no disadvantage.

@404mediaco

The decentralized instance (mastodon.social) you're using is hosted behind Fastly, a centralized American cloud corporation worth 1.34 billion US Dollars.

If they decide, they can block any post from your account, or modify anything you post.

Because mastodon.social admins, in their quest for decentralized social media without corporate control, decided to give this company full MITM access.

2/2 🧵the #Fediverse has it's own unspoken rules. I'm hoping others here can help me out together a proper list - in the context of photographers - that would be good to know whenever they do join.

So far I have:
- Adding Alt text to images
- Day of the Week photo games e.i. #TreeTuesday and #MountainMonday etc.
- #Pixelfed vs #Mastodon and how the fediverse works with account tags and servers
- Public vs Quiet Public vs Private messages.
- CamelCase and why

What else should I cover?

Yesterday I announced to my #instagram I was done. I'm leaving, and so in a week after I've given my followers time to reach out for my contact info I will be deleting the app.

#Mastodon and the #Fediverse have been such a breathe of fresh air when it comes to social media - thanks all of you people 👊

However, I've realized there are barriers to entry, so, I want to put together a blog for my photographer buds. A list of "best practices" 1/2 🧵
