Even the Newton Messagepad let you build apps on-device.
Lazy question - and I will sift through a search engine too. Is anyone who uses a lot of #Apple products backing up to an external hard drive instead of #iCloud? Just wondering about the feasibility and difficulty of that. My phone is fine but laptop is an old model so can’t have the Advanced Data Protection function so wondering about the best course of action. Of course then my phone and laptop no longer sync. Wondering what’s best for my data protection. Advice welcome
Is there an #email app for
#iphone that's privacy respecting and works with POP3, for generic email?
(This would be as a secondary device accessing the email account.)
FOSS and locally encrypted would be a bonus.
I'm helping a friend remotely, I don't have an iphone so have no experience with what's available.
OMFG. OMFG.... You can't make this shit up even if you tried.
Imagine you are an app developer with a functioning backend. That backend has users and those user's are grouped together in something called a "company".
So you make two test users within a "test" company, so that the app reviewers of Apple and Google can test your app. Those users are respectively called "apple@domain.tld" and "google@domain.tld".
This morning I got an email from Apple that said;
"Guideline 2.1 - Information Needed
We were unable to sign in with the following demo account credentials you provided in App Store Connect:"
Turns out, that the app reviewer of Google removed the test user used by Apple......

I really want iOS19 to look more like NewtOS. All these colors and overly-cluttered UI are cumbersome and distracting.
According to a new report, Apple intends to introduce “one of the most dramatic software overhauls in the company’s history,” to iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 to transform the interface “for a new generation of users.”

I wrote a simple guide for purchasing a VOIP DID phone number from the US and setting it up to send a push notification to an iOS app. Useful for people who switch numbers a lot and want one static US phone number to receive annoying text message verifications at. https://matduggan.com/how-to-get-a-did-on-ios-easily/
@gaufff @mwl well #thunderbird plans to have something to test for #ios by the end of the year - but I do not expect it to be on the same level as the desktop client.
I’m using the native app right now - but it is very limited in its functionality…
Although there are standalone clients they are a) old and potentially no longer properly developed or b) questionable when it comes to privacy
@armin @mwl Mail on #apple is a very difficult thing, I'm in the middle of that myself
On #macos : several options, I find #thunderbird is the best you can get.
On #iOS: to my knowledge there is no #opensource option for a mail #IMAP client. Which is crazy! Only options are tied to a specific (and external, so not for you) provider: #tuta , #protonmail , in my case #mailfence .
I'm afraid that your only option on #iOS is the default #mail app...
#selfhost and #apple clearly don't seem to be good friends...
So, last night I finally took the last step and switchted my DNS entries to my own self hosted mail server (@mwl your book was really helpful - great work!)
But now I am back to my previous problem - which mail client to use on iOS and macOS - any suggestions fediverse? (boosts are quiet welcome)

Having issues with #accessibility on #HamRadioPrep for #ios and the developers don't care. I'm using the #VoiceOver #ScreenReader and the app reads two choices for each answer as if they are shuffling the choices to prevent memorization of the letters. Example: A D all of these choices are correct. Also it doesn't tell me if the answer is correct when I tap on it. I work around this by utilizing the retake missed questions feature
Applications and even the OS itself (mostly mobile OS's) make it extremely difficult for local backups.
Some times, the option does not even exist as if, using the cloud is the only option. Users must either comply (with their wallets & giving up ownership of their data) or, well, fuck off.
Although options do exist, users are blindfolded so that they don't see or even, seek them.
If users decide they want to stop using these services for whatever reason, then the process of detaching is designed to discourage them from doing so. Warnings of data loss, spam to rethink, threats of limited functionality.
Even the uploaded data that are given back, are not exactly the same as for some very strange reason, metadata are removed. Maybe to fuck up someone's goal of creating their local library & return them back to their online service (s).
Usage of a smartphone &/or a mainstream computer nowadays, pushes the user towards online services - mostly the cloud.
These services require a monthly fee, are integrated deeply into the OS, provide an extreme ease of usage, are appealing to the eye.
But what they actually do first & foremost, is to remove any sense of ownership. They take hostage of user's data, make themselves appear a necessity that must be kept for life - just like a prescribed drug.
